The inks used in continuous inkjet devices have to mark the substrate successfully and be quick drying while at the same time allowing the device to operate successfully without causing blockages. These seemingly conflicting demands, coupled with the need for specialist inks in some cases, mean it is important that you make the correct choice.
The Needham Group started as an ink supplier and has been developing and manufacturing inks since 1962. Its Fluids System Division develops, evaluates and manufactures a wide range of inks to the highest quality standards. The knowledge and experience it has gained means it is ideally placed to advise you on the best choice of ink for any job and in any situation. Additionally, it can manufacture inks for specialist purposes.
Your choice of ink is often determined by the substrate to be marked. Cardboard packaging is a porous, quick drying material where cheaper, water-based ink can be used whereas plastic and other non-porous substrates require a quick drying, solvent-based ink. All inks are generally available in a range of colours and there are specialist inks for particular uses and situations:
- Food grade inks are suitable for edible products and are generally alcohol or ethanol-based. They meet Federal Drug Administration (FDA) standards in the US and EU standards in Europe.
- Security inks are almost invisible in normal light but can be clearly seen under UV light.
- Autoclave inks undergo a colour change at certain temperatures.
- Removable inks are suitable for returnable and reusable containers since they can be removed by washing.
